UMTS - Universal Mobile Telecommunications System - is the evolutionary 3G mobile system standardised under the ITU's IMT-2000 umbrella. UMTS is the 3G system that GSM networks naturally evolve to. A GSM network operator offering GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) can migrate their network to UMTS in stages, providing UMTS service initially in the most lucrative areas, whilst providing 2.5G service to other users via GSM and GPRS.
