Hands-on Practicals

Spectrum Analyser Setup, Use and In-Depth Analysis
This lab set gives students the necessary familiarity, experience and competence to analyse RF behaviour using spectrum analysers. Student explore spectrum analyser traces and charts and interpret the data to understand a transmitter's impact on a Wi-Fi network. Exercises include:
1. Installation and familiarisation with an RF Spectrum Analyser
2. Understanding the RF perspective provided by each visualisation
3. Using built-in features and automated device identification
4. Characterising interference sources and their behaviours
5. Assessing the impact of different interference sources
6. Determining the impact of transmitter proximity on interference and spectrum analysis visualisations
7. Identifying common transmitters by their signatures
8. Remote site RF Spectrum Analysis using a remote AP

The 10-lab Protocol Analyser lab set focusses on gaining familiarity with analysis tools, using protocol analysers to capture traffic and interpret frame traces:
1. Installation and familiarity with capabilities, configuration, and data visualisation
2. Creating, saving, viewing and modifying capture files
3. Device naming and prioritisation, traffic filtering, colouring rules and more
4. Performing live captures using defined collection criteria
5. Identifying significant network behaviours, metrics and statistics - to identify and isolate network problems
6. Using Protocol Analyser "Expert" features, including conversation analysis
7. Remote site packet trace capture using a remote AP

Understanding Frame Components
This 9-lab set focusses on using protocol analysis tools to capture and visualise multiple 802.11 frame types and formats. Familiarity with 802.11 frame structure and content is essential for effective Wi-Fi network troubleshooting. Areas of focus include:
1. Understanding the 802.11 MAC frame header
2. Comparing the three major frame types and their subtypes
3. Analysing frame formats for individual frame types
4. Analysing 802.11n frame components
5. Analysing 802.11ac frame components
6. Identifying key information elements reported the protocol analyser
7. Understanding the information that is not presented by a protocol analyser

Frame Exchanges
For effective Wi-Fi network troubleshooting it is essential to know how and when each 802.11 frame is used in interactive communication. Understanding Wi-Fi frame exchange rules and behaviour is critical to identifying expected and unexpected behaviour. This lab focusses on observing and explaining 802.11 WLAN behaviour using a protocol analyser. Lab exercises include:
1. Connectivity exchanges and sequences
2. Legacy and modern security exchanges
3. ERP and HT protection mechanisms
4. Power save behaviour
5. Acknowledgments, block acknowledgments, and supporting action frames
6. Dynamic rate switching
7. Band steering
8. Further student-led exercises

Troubleshooting Wi-Fi Network Problems
This lab enables students to identify and diagnose a series of common Wi-Fi network problems, including:
1. Troubleshooting Wi-Fi network connectivity
2. Troubleshooting 802.11i / WPA Enterprise 802.1X and EAP authentication
3. Troubleshooting Wi-Fi client roaming in a multi-AP Wi-Fi network
